Four tool groups to prepare before installation

Bring the correct tools to the roofline before mounting begins. Product-specific wiring and connector requirements can vary by layout and controller.

Wire strippers remove insulation cleanly without nicking or weakening the copper conductor. Match the stripping slot to the actual wire gauge, then inspect each conductor before connecting power supplies, controllers, or light strings.

Correct low-voltage wire

Choose low-voltage wire by run length and electrical load. Shorter runs commonly use 18- or 16-gauge wire, while longer power-injection routes may require 14- or 12-gauge wire to limit voltage drop. Confirm the system requirements before ordering cable.

Dry locations

Protected wire connectors

Lever connectors make reusable, inspectable low-voltage connections without twisting wires. They are not waterproof and must remain inside a suitable dry enclosure.

Solderless connectors provide a fast, heat-free way to join wiring when the connector type and wire gauge match the installation.

Digital multimeter

Use a digital multimeter to confirm voltage and polarity at the power supply and at planned checkpoints along the run. Testing before final mounting helps identify voltage drop, reversed polarity, or a weak connection before it causes dimming, color errors, or equipment damage.
